Abdul Rachman Arif, the elder brother of the late president Abd as-Salam Arif, becomes president under pressure of the military. Political power remained in military hands and the era was one of great unrest in Iraq. Once in office Arif tried to ignore military demands and was deposed in the Revolution of 1968.
